The Sverdlovsk Affair

[Real history]: When the Bolshevik revolution happened and Lenin, a man of science, took charge, soviet scientists were given much more freedom to perform experiments that were hitherto seen as "too juvenile" by westerners. It was a golden era for genius geneticists such as Nikolai Vavilov. When Lenin passed, this golden age did too. The pseudoscientist Trofim Lysenko used his friendship with new leader Stalin to send scientists who disagreed with his false theories of plant genetics to labor camps, leading to the starvation of millions. [The Rest of History]: Vavilov and his associates were sent to do menial work in a small biological weapons facility in Sverdlovsk. There, they swore revenge. Their plan was to depose of Lysenko and create a scientific rennaisance in the soviet union. This plan involved two steps, developed in two top-secret programs.

The Svyatogor program (Named after a hero from russian folklore, meaning "Sacred Mountain") was the first of these. In order to crush any resistance to their regime change, the scientists developed superhuman soldiers. These soldiers matured to adulthood twice as fast as normal people, and had superhuman strength and reflexes. They also had the ability to naturally secrete chemical cocktails into their bloodstream, which could replicate the effects of substances such as methamphetamine or adrenaline, to further enhance their capabilities when needed. These soldiers needed a leader. Someone who could rule the soviet union well, and who the people would love. The same group of scientists would give them one.

The Koschei program (Named after a classic villain from russian folklore, often called "The Immortal" or "The Deathless") involved harvesting DNA from Lenin's body at his mauseoleum, and using that to create a perfect clone of him, which would then be secretly swapped with the real Lenin's corpse. This plan took a long time to finish, and Vavilov would not see his work finished in his lifetime. The days when Lysenko ruled and real science was oppressed had long since passed. The plan was no longer necessary, but the younger scientists that had taken over the program saw an opportunity: They were power hungry, and decided to turn their Lenin clone into a puppet.

Koschei, The Deathless.

In 1979, citizens visiting Lenin's tomb were surprised to find him waking up from what had apparently been a sixty-year sleep, unhindered by the illness that previously had him wheelchair-bound, or the fact that his brain had been removed post-mortem. Seeing this miraculous event as a true symbol of the greatness of communism, Soviet leadership invited him to the Kremlin, and over the next year he would learn everything that had happened during his extended nap. When Lenin seemed to be adequately caught up to the state of the world, Brezhnev graciously resigned and handed over de jure leadership of the country to Lenin, with de facto leadership now lying in the hands of a small group of scientists in a Sverdlovsk basement.
